Our Goal

MbeleNaBiz seeks to create jobs and increase income for young men and women. The Government of Kenya recognises the need for job creation to address the challenge of youth unemployment in Kenya. By investing in young entrepreneurs whose ventures will generate employment opportunities and earnings for unemployed youth, the Competition contributes to the development of an inclusive economy that provides opportunities for as many Kenyans as possible.

Who We Are

The MbeleNaBiz business plan competition (“MbeleNaBiz”) is an initiative of the Government of Kenya, under the Kenya Youth Employment and Opportunities Project (KYEOP). MbeleNaBiz aims to expand new and existing youth-led enterprises by providing them with grant funding and/or business plan training. MbeleNaBiz is implemented by the Micro and Small Enterprises Authority (MSEA) and the Ministry of Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs (MPYG), with support from the World Bank. KPMG has been contracted to manage MbeleNaBiz.

The MPYG through the Directorate of Youth Affairs (DYA) under the State Department of Public Service and Youth is the coordinating agency for the Kenya Youth Employment and Opportunities Project (KYEOP) 2016 – 2021.

MSEA is a state corporation established under the Micro and Small Enterprise Act No. 55 of 2012. The Authority is domiciled in the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Co-operatives. The Act gives the Authority the mandate to formulate and co-ordinate policies that will facilitate the integration and harmonization of various public and private sector initiatives, for the promotion, development and regulation of the Micro and Small Enterprises to become key industries of tomorrow.


The development objective of KYEOP is to increase employment and earning opportunities among targeted young people across Kenya. The project aims to reach over 280,000 youth during the project period through various components, including the MbeleNaBiz business plan competition.

The World Bank Group has set two goals for the world to achieve by 2030: i) End extreme poverty by decreasing the percentage of people living on less than $1.90 a day to no more than 3% ii) Promote shared prosperity by fostering the income growth of the bottom 40% for every country.
